The day I’ve been waiting for has come! I, like all of North Carolina, wasn’t prepared of course. Though this being true, I still managed to make the most out of the first and probably only snow day of the year!
After watching the news the night before, I knew the whole town would be shut down. The next morning I woke up at 7:30am to run to the grocery store before the weather got “bad.” If you’re not from NC, SC, or GA, you should know that we take our snow days here very seriously. The people who don’t however, are the road crews. I’m kidding, sort of. We normally only have one snow day a year, so we don’t need the road tools to maintain a blizzard.
At the grocery store, I notice two things are gone, milk and bread. This happens every time a news reporter mentions even the slightest chance of ice or snow. I don’t really know why people choose to buy a lot of just these two items but the reason my grandmother gave me was that the bread is for sandwiches and the milk is for cereal. Still not a good enough reason for me, but oh well! At the grocery store, 2 of the many things I picked up was condensed milk and vanilla. Soon you’ll see why.
Lounging around is definitely one of my favorite things to do in general, but on a snow day, I don’t feel so guilty about it. There’s something so relaxing about watching snow fall outside your window while you’re curled up on the couch with a hot cup of tea and a nice book.
The book I chose to read today is one of my favorites called Women in Love by D.H. Lawrence. It’s a book full of loves ups and downs. If you’re a hopeless romantic like myself, then you will very much enjoy the book. It’s full of beautiful quotes on love and life. I will share with you one of many favorite quotes of mine from the book.
Instead of chopping yourself down to fit the world, chop the world down to fit yourself.
Who has heard of snow cream? I was very surprised when I told people I was making this and they had no clue what I was talking about. Even my friends from up north who get tons of snow had no idea this was a “thing.” Well ya’ll are gonna learn today!
You only need three ingredients:
- Condensed milk
- Vanilla Flavor (optional, just gives more of a vanilla taste)
Collect your snow! I suggest putting a baking bowl or a pot outside to collect fresh snow. If you forgot to do this, you can scrape the first small layer of snow off the ground and get the cleaner snow underneath (just make sure the snow is deep enough to do this.)
The amount of condensed milk you use depends on how much snow you collect. Just make sure you have enough condensed milk poured in to stick the snow together for a creamier consistency. You really don’t need much.
Add a tsp of vanilla and stir it up
Step 4.) Enjoy!
